MACRO WORKSHOP

Macro Workshop

Since 9.30 the client’s patch-9 ships 3.3.5-style macros: #showtooltip, [conditions], @mouseover, /use, /castsequence and more — no addon needed. Write, check or let AI draft a macro here, then paste it into the in-game macro window.

    AI macro helper

Describe what you want in a sentence; the AI writes a macro that follows this realm’s macro rules and explains each line. It can also review the macro in the editor. Always check spell names against your spellbook.

    Getting started

    1. Type /macro in game, create a macro and pick the question-mark icon.
    2. Paste the macro text; start with #showtooltip.
    3. Drag the macro to an action bar. The button shows the icon, cooldown and tooltip of whatever it will cast right now.
    #showtooltip /cast [@mouseover,help,nodead][help,nodead][@player] Flash Heal

This heals the friendly unit under your mouse (unit frames count), otherwise your friendly target, otherwise yourself.

    Syntax

    • [conditions] action runs only when the conditions hold. Commas mean “and”: [harm, nodead].
    • Several bracket groups mean “or”: [@mouseover,help][help]; the first group that holds wins.
    • Semicolons separate clauses: /cast [harm] Shadow Bolt; Heal. A clause without brackets always holds.
    • Empty brackets [] always hold — handy as a fallback.
    • Prefix no negates: nocombat, nodead, noform.
    • Arguments follow a colon, alternatives use slashes: [mod:shift/ctrl], [stance:1/2].
    • Choose the unit with @unit or target=unit, e.g. [@focus,harm].
    • ! before a spell keeps it on if already active: /cast !Auto Shot, /cast !Cat Form.
    • Ranks are optional (highest by default): Shadow Bolt(Rank 3).

    #showtooltip and #show

    • #showtooltip shows the icon, cooldown, count and tooltip of the spell or item on the button.
    • #show does the same without replacing the tooltip.
    • You may name what to show, with conditions: #showtooltip [mod:shift] Chain Heal; Lesser Healing Wave. Otherwise the first /cast or /use is used.
    • The icon only changes when the macro uses the question-mark icon.
    • With nampower installed, buttons also turn red out of range and blue without enough mana.

    Units

player, target, mouseover (world units and unit frames), focus, pet, party1–party4, raid1–raid40, targettarget, pettarget.

    Length and long macros

    • Up to 1023 characters per macro (the original limit is 255). Keep each line under 255.
    • Macros over 255 bytes keep their first lines in the game’s macro and the full text in your local WTF saved data.
    • The full text is saved through Turtle’s built-in Turtle_General addon; keep it enabled or long macros only last for the session.
    • Like stock macros, they live on your PC: back up WTF if you change computers.

    Dependencies and compatibility

    • No addon needed: it lives in patch-9 of both the standard and HD clients; just update via the launcher.
    • SuperWoW (shipped by the launcher) lets @unit casts skip retargeting and provides mounted/swimming/indoors and focus. Without it the macro briefly retargets.
    • nampower adds out-of-range and out-of-mana button colors.
    • /focus uses Nanami-UI’s focus frame when present, otherwise SuperWoW.
    • With SuperMacro, Roid-Macros or similar installed, the system steps aside; /nmacro force overrides that.
    • /nmacro off restores stock macro behavior; /nmacro on turns it back on.

    FAQ

    • Icon doesn’t change? Use the question-mark macro icon.
    • #showtooltip shows up in chat? Your client doesn’t have the 9.30 patch-9 yet — update through the launcher.
    • “Unsupported macro condition”? Check the spelling, or it is a later-expansion condition such as flying. The editor flags these.
    • Nothing is cast? The spell name must match your spellbook exactly; try /cast Name in chat first.
    • No loops or timers: a macro runs once per key press by design.
